I have consistently made world mapping too hard. Quick and dirty world build my land and sea with d% rolls. Each number is the area of each bit of landmass or ocean. It's ocean if the # is greater than 29% or whatever your target land ratio is. Blob zero is at tht north pole, blob one is adjacent. This is quick and dirty, remember? 8-P

43, polar ocean
65, adjacent ocean, may merge, 108 m. km^2 total, 0% land...
41, more ocean, 149 total
28, landmass!!! 28/177 is 15.82% land

Continue until we have an earth sized world, setting a default of ~500 m. km^2 surface area.

So far we have roughly the northern third of the world, the three ocean blobs would be a little more than down to ~30 degrees north latitude.
How about a situation?

40, 25, a 25 year old woman rescues... 56, 24, a 24 year old woman. From drowning? 40 under 56%, yes, a flash flood, younger woman drove into deeper water than they expected and the car went floating
Mass of aliens: 2 d% rolls, 46 and 55, normal range of 46 to 55 kg, or take the higher # and use +/-46%? That's a range of 30 to 80 kg, 66 to 176 #s, average of 121 #s.

Bilateral or radial symmetry? 60% chance bilateral, 44 is a yes. Bilateral evolved from 'fish'. That last is just a judgement call, crawled up into the mud with more that two pairs of legs? 36 under... 36%? Interesting. Yes. More than three pairs? 51 over 44%, so no, three pairs, a centauroid?

What chance of a survival game, pandemic or mega volcano? 46%, rolled a 35, so MV and pandemic at the same time...

43 and 48, a 43 year old man
39 and 49, another man, 39 are they related?
51% chance, 37, yes cousins, Mom's are or were sisters...

Yet another Oracle ..

D% roll- 43% chance of aliens; 76, which is a fairly strong no, a 76% chance that this isn't my usual starfish aliens, tramp merchant strange old worlds for fun and profit setting.

Strongly opposite that is medieval fantasy, which I am not interested in doing, either...

Two d% rolls, again.

46 and 51 would be a 46 year old man, or perhaps we pass/fail some other thing than male or female, and age is the lowest of two or more d%.

Okay...

Something weird, something wonderful!

Diamond quads, find a point within the canvas.

Sunday, August 16, 2026

Land or water? Land if 2nd d% is less than the 1st d%, and use the lesser # for the amount, like I do with an age and gender roll for a random PC.

Do diagonals again?

Another wasted Saturday night...

Ocean, shore, wetlands, grassland, forest, mountains, desert, seven terrain types. d% times seven, round up, 1 to 7. .59*7 is 4.13, round up to 5, forest. Each terrain tile is an up or down triangle, roll d% vs d%,  if the 2nd roll is less than the first, an up, northerly triangle, vs a down, southerly triangle. 1st is 51%, 2nd is 43%, up or northerly.

Diamond quad instead?

Friday, August 14, 2026

D% for size and type of terrain, type then size, two rolls?

Biomes: grassland, forest, wetlands, desert, ocean.

Grassland can border ocean, desert, forest or wetlands, plus wetlands.

Ocean borders grassland or ocean

Forest borders grassland, wetlands or forest.

Wetlands border grassland, forest, or westland.

Desert borders grassland or desert.

Add mountains to forest and desert?

Thursday, August 13, 2026

D% = 65%

39, 75: 39 land out of 114.

Assigning terrain biome by accretion?
Chance of an alien is 61%: 48, so yes and one trait is 48%.

Flying and fighting and singing.

Butterfly wasp alien bards?

Missed a day...

I have been working up an alien invasion base, the apocalypse is an alien invasion.

A quick and dirty random fantasy kingdom is 71 parts water, 56 parts arable land, 47 parts wild forest, and 41 parts mountains, 215 areas, call them ~100 km^2 each? Or 10 km hexes, which would be ~65 km^2.

Sunday, August 9, 2026

61% chance of being my default space adventure type of game; 51, so yes. A survey crew of (d%) 52 is waaaay too many, make it seven, 5+2, and five scientists and two crew, a pilot engineer with a ship handling certification and a medic who maintains the organic parts of the life support system, a life systems tech who services and backs up the the medical pod. The two geologists, xenobiologist, climatologist and hydrologist make up the science team; technically all are generalist planetologists who specialize, just like the one geologist is looking for ore bodies.

Stuu

The monster is a threat of 51%, which is 51 hit points, an attack, defense, perception and everything of 51%. I roll d% of 48, which is still successful and a high success of 48.

Waiting to get Mom into dialysis.

34 and 41, HR% is 41/75 and land is 34/75. 45.33% land and 54.67% ocean, roughly 9 to 11 triangle tiles on a d20 type exploded icosahedron world map.

Monday, August 3, 2026

29 and 53, a 29 year old male.
44 and 51, a 44 year old male.
48 and 85, a 48 year old male.
Are they related? 51% chance, 36 (and I double tapped, so the stopwatch started back up again but it was 36), so all three are related, sons of the same mother...she had the youngest brother at 36 and is 65.

Who are these people and who is the father?

What sort of trouble are these people in? When and where? How do they deal with their trouble and why?

The obvious answer is zpocalypse, but what else is interesting? Alien invasion! Why? Alien refugees, like district 9? Ecological invasion, as well, mild terraforming??

Rolled 2d%, 41 and 55, went with higher number but sexual dimorphism? Aliens mass between 41 and 55 kg , ~90 to 121 #. Space elves? So original...

65% and 10 is a 10 year old female; 44 under 29% is not the youngest son's daughter, 1 under 44% is the middle son's daughter.

Survivor base has a defense: 77%, food: 50%, supplies: 56%, and peeps: 31%, literally 31 people with a skill base of 31%, not good, but excellent defensive position, either good fencing, etc. and/or skill defenders and reinforcement of a house or building. It's hit or miss, 50%, whether the people are getting enough food. We can alternate between choosing to define a daily mission, or having a random event happen to the base as a whole.

I can take the same approach to developing a whole world or state. Quick and dirty stats are best of two or even three d% rolls on my stopwatch function: 59, 40 & 57 is 59, so my monster has an attack of 59 a defense of 59 and a health of 59, whether the monster is a starship or a zombie, within reasonable parameters.

Keep this simple, the second son has a daughter and wifey is missing. Their old man is dead, before the invasion. Mom and youngest brother were living with oldest brother and second and the niece noped out of occupied territory to reach safety. Five people, contractor, teacher who was also a paramedic, second brother was also a teacher, actually a professor with a computer science degree and had contacts, learned things, got moving just in time...

Youngest worked for oldest brother in his contracting business. Built things, is an electrician. Eldest does concrete, payroll and was a demolition guy for the Marines once upon a time.

A sergeant is in for up to 12 years without advancing in rank, 17 to 29, got out 19 years ago when youngest was 10 and basically came home, started a business, supported mom and little brother after dad died and Mom fell apart for six months of self-pity. Eldest was parentified with second and left home to get out.

The middle brother is mixed up in the resistance and the older brother wants to hide and survive...
