So, I have actually been getting code written and figuring stuff out...

Stuck between a decent hex based icosahedral world map where the hexagons vary in width  by the row and latitude, and a sinusoid filled with 'quads' of at least 1 m.km^2.

I can mess around with the quads as necessary., by the corners.
