Pickles of all kinds, were a welcome find, but "you cannot live by pickles alone," Brenda pronounced one morning, then cut loose with an eye tearing fart. Ben was both impressed, along with Tom, and appalled, along with Carol his mother, but they all laughed. Pickles, pickled eggs and pig's feet (it ate, if you were hungry enough) and kimchee, oh my!

"We need to make vinegar along with gun powder and alcohol, source salt, potassium or potash, really, salt peter, a million things," Tom informed Ben one evening. Brenda had a concert, Ben mused, and shared a smile with Carol. She was already in Brenda's camp, and Ben was Team Brenda all the way...

Except.

Except, to be honest, he was still a little apathetic. He would take what came. It hurt less than all this business of planning and hoping
