Let's think about the lay of the land; we have a major river down some landmass from some highlands. I was thinking of England and Scotland, but what if this is a peninsula connecting to a larger landmass to the far northwest, like a reverse Scandinavia. The majority of the local dominant culture(s) and kingdoms is a little further south, islands far to the east and west.
